I decided to take part of my day off to do a tiddly bitmore on the beast of Gorgoroth. As I find chains the most annoyng thing to paint, I did them first, to remove the risk of frustratingly spoiling a carefully painted skin.

As the colour scheme for my force of Cirith Ungol is an eerie blue (Shock-horror! L.o.t.R. forces of eveil using a cold colour? Surely not!), I wanted to subtly include some blue on the beast, other than just the pieces of cloth. So I got out what will, I think, be a much used pot of Asurmen Blue wash which I liberaly applied to the first coat of grey, before doing two highlight coats. It's a very basic way of doing things, but I can no longer afford to spend quite so long paintingminis, so I opted for quick but effective solution. The infantry will simply be dipped.

Having at last decided to give my self a kick up the backside and get back into the hobby, I knew that only something worthy of an announcement would suffice. What better task to undertake than to put together the Best of Gorgorth which the Frog, Shas'El'Hek'Tryk, gifted me for my birthday ("Because it's my birthday, and I wants it.") some 8 months ago.

We all know the inherent problems of Finecast, so I'll spare you the details. Let's just say that it didn't slot together very well. Happily, a quick answer was at hand. As any good English solution to a problem, it involved tea. It turns out that, when plunged in freshly boiled water, Finecast becomes perfectly malleable, without actually melting away any of the details. After that, all that was needed was a bit of liquid Green Stuff and Milliput to plug the last gaps.

I split my force into 3 divisions; the first, led by the King, would go straight up the centre and secure the objective in the middle of the battlefield. The second would take the objective on my right, anchoring its flank against a massive dragon’s skull. The third, my cavalry and a couple of javelins, would go around the skull and take the enemy in the rear. The elves would thus be caught up in a firmly established killing ground (area marked in black on the first image), between the King’s men, the captain’s unit and the flanking cavalry to the rear. Once I had dealt with his main body of men, I would then send a few warriors to capture the final objective. My adversary had a large mass of dragon bones on his left, which meant that his only way of sending a large squad to hold the objective on my left would mean putting them way out of his right, away from all the fighting. He therefore decided to concentrate all his forces in one area, mirroring to some extent my own deployment. I was feeling pretty confident; all those points he’d spent on bows for those expert elf archers would be pretty much useless, whereas my javelins would still have all their potential. On top of that, during a test game 3 days earlier, my Rohirrim had completely trounced the Frog (Shas’El’Hek’Tryk) using Limey’s elves, so I knew that my warriors could hold their own against elves.

Take out their archers and meet me in the middle!

I sent my men forwards and they duly took up their positions. Of course, the objectives being equidistant between my lines and the enemy’s, we both got to the central objective at the same time. I just managed to get to the objective on my right slightly ahead of my opponent, but his troops were so close that that objective was obviously being contested. He sent 2 men to the objective on my left. I had plenty of time and decided to deal with them later, want wanted to spread the fighting to a third place, as that would dilute the effect of my killing ground.
The elven archers stayed slightly behind, either to serve as a tactical reserve or to deal with my cavalry. Unfortunately for them, it was my cavalry which dealt with them, taking them out relatively easily, before falling on the rear of his army, as planned.

Despite my javelins in the centre managing to disrupt his lines quite effectively, the rest of my warriors were simply failing to make any real impact. The fight was set to last quite a while yet.

And then came the shout I least wanted to hear…”Last turn!”

What??? The organisers, naturally having to juggle with the lunch break, decided to cut the battle short, by at least half an hour.

Result of the battle: the central and right objectives were being contested. I hadn’t had time to get a detachment over to deal with the 2 elves at the objective on my left. Both generals had stayed in the centre, so my adversary won 1-0.

That’ll teach me to deal with all objectives right away. Time is a variable which could have gone either way.

Primary objective Rohan: 0 objectives. I pointed out that orange is the perfect complimentary colour to turquoise and yellow-green. I hope that this model will convince him of my genious. In this first test, as rank increases, so does the proportion of black. On common soldiers, the turban and belt are black. I've continued to paint just über-basic highlights, followed by the beautifully contradictory "brush-on-dipping". The aim is really to get a quick Mordor force up and running (preferably in the direction of the enemy) at battletop standard. Mordor is ideal for this as orcs look filthy and are essentially brown, with various items of brown clothing, with dirty armour. And my my, doesn’t time fly! It turns out that, during my 5-month break from wargaming, G.W. brought out a new edition of the Warhammer boxed set, L.o.t.R. dwarves and gobbos, Warlord started selling Crimean Brits, E.C.W. highlanders and dragoons, and my brother put together a Russian F.o.W. batallion (see the French language version of this blog… I’m still trying to get him to write in English as well)!

But give in not to fear, my friends! As the oppressive heat of summer gives way to the gentle breese of autumn, so our new campaigning season begins. Kicking it off, Limey’s assembling a force of orcs from Morannon. I’ll be carrying on with some E.C.W., trying to catch up on the F.o.W. front with my German infantry company, as well as picking up where I left off with orcs from Cirith Ungol. I’m hoping to hassle the Kraut into finishing his Minas Tirith company and I’ve not yet given up hope of finally seeing an L.o.t.R. company rising up painted from the vast mounds of grey plastic in the Frog’s pond.

Without any further ado, here is my take on Grimbold of Rohan!

I decided, following a discussion with the Frog (always useful when seeking a theme), to opt for a less conventional colour for this fellow's cloak. Of course, one has to use suitable arrows for each bow (weight, body and length), other wise the archer's paradox can cause this to happen! There are 3 markings on the front of the bow in 2 circles which I have yet to decipher. The XIXth century emos) of the harsh climate, the living conditions and the propaganda. I like the power and boldness of communist icons and art.
Russian soldiers, while maybe not being the best fighters, have always been known for their sturdiness. These men suffered far worse conditios of climate and hunger than the rest of europeans. But they shown incredible risiliance against Napoleon, and in the 2 world wars. That inspires me.
So it seemed logical to go for a winter army, in longcoats.
For the army format, waves of men, the soviet image we've come to know, with the terrible losses.
My first purchase was a squad of soldiers in longcoats. There are unfortunately very few figs of this type. Thought to myself "Don't forget the lact of equipment!".
So to represent this along with le chaos in the ranks, men struggling to survive, I bought a squad of regular soldiers and a squad of hardenend veterans, to mix them all.

Before receving them, I undercoated all my winter dudes in an hour and a half. 28 figs. That seement like quite a lot and I was pleased with myself. But now with the others, Yikes!

But the small size and even the Russian armement production style go well with my painting style. Simple but quick. With some embarrassing faults that show up later.

I started by organising each type of fig (normal, winter, veteran) ilteams. Then I randomly re-arranged them.
I spent ages trying to decide on the styles of figs to represent at best the rangs of NCO, lieutenant, co comander, komissar, 2nd in command and general; while at the same time having figs that all the the same for eack rank. You follow? No mean feat! With the various helmets, hats, caps, fur hats and bare heads...
My aim was for brave NCOs, a proud and inspiring co commander, blood-thirsty komissars, 2nd-in command and general with all these qualities.
I'd bought a cossack command for fun and I thought their savage look, fur hats and the sword would be good for the HQ.

I'll give more details when painted.
But here's a pic, with 2 of the 3 SU122 tanks.
To complete my 600pts, I'll need another squad, or heavy support.
I think you'll see a big difference in numbers with BarbarianJ's Krauts. And having the advantage on my side is far from unpleasant.
Limeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00163255576387258819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7311607647576239951.post-6849384204611579342010-03-03T08:59:00.001+01:002011-07-01T12:20:55.112+02:00Tank you very much!
Well, it took some time, but I'm back on the blog with 2 Marder IIIMs, a birthday present from my brother, to join my first German Grenadieren platoon for F.o.W.! I need to re-do the camouflage, as I've since noticed that the actual base colour for summer cammo on Gerry vehicles had a slight green tint, so some Vallejo Middlestone or some such like will be required. I'm taking the opportunity to finally decide on whether to go for Summer or Winter as a theme. The 26.V-G saw its most famous actions at Bastogne, so Winter, and on the Eastern front during the summer... so like a Western Winter.

As it is, the cammo needs some more work anyway, as the base colour should be a lot less visible, with more dominant green and brown strips of paint.

I am rather pleased with the mud effect, though.
